The story behind Mountain River Flower Patch

Mountain River Flower Patch began as a simple love for growing things. Matt was always happiest with dirt under his nails, tending the garden around the home they built in Mountain River in 2019. As the rows of blooms grew, Alice suggested opening the gates and letting others enjoy what they saw every day — the colour, the calm, and the mountain backdrop that never gets old.

The patch is still run by the family who lives here. Matt and Alice work the beds, build the soil, and hand-weed every row. Their kids pitch in too, planting seeds, pulling the odd weed, and proudly picking little posies for the kitchen bench. Everything is grown with care: no chemicals, no shortcuts, just healthy soil layered with local organic material so the flowers can thrive. Most of the varieties — dahlias, roses, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and more — are chosen because they look beautiful and last well once placed in a vase at home.

Today, visitors come to slow down for a few hours, wander the rows and pick a vase of blooms to take home. Some come to take photos, others to reconnect with nature for an afternoon. The patch is peaceful, simple, and still new — and that’s part of its charm. It’s a small farm with a big heart, built to be shared.
